Les raboteurs de parquet (1875), oil on canvas by Gustave Caillebotte in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris (Wikipedia) depicting the renovation by hardworking men of Caillebotte’s elegant home studio. They remade an antique space for vibrant new uses — in particular the transformation of visual art wrought by Impressionism. In his refurbished studio Caillebotte bridged the chasm between stodgy academic painting and innovative experiment. It’s an apt analogy for Resurgam: freeing literary legacies from the quiescent past to regain their full powers of lively expression and influence in the digital present. Resurgam’s first four projects kickstart a literary legacy in different and complementary ways. Each of these projects:

The second version of Les raboteurs de parquet (1876), oil on canvas by Gustave Caillebotte in a private collection (Wikimedia Commons). This composition was painted after the first version was rejected for exhibition at the Paris Salon. It has the same subject, is a bit brighter and more assertive, and the men here are working quietly, perhaps more deliberately.
